A bold adaptation of the classic play by Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko with a fresh, modern twist from Nafta Theatre. Social struggles of Ukrainian life are revealed through the rhythms of hip-hop and jazz, seasoned with sarcasm and witty humor. The performance is enhanced by generative video art, live saxophone and electric guitar. All the music is original, written and performed by our team to make the whole theater groove.
At the heart of the story is Ulyana’s passionate love for Oleksii, her greedy parents, and Stepan—an unfortunate suitor her family insists she marry. Will Ulyana succumb to her mother’s pressure, or will she follow her true love story? You’ll find out at the show. All events take place in Honcharivka, near Kharkiv’s Kholodna Hora.
