Theater critic Yurii Smolych wrote that Maik Yohansen had no idea what the difference was between potatoes and meat and had an astonishing ability to buy the worst wine. Yet, he was a person of exquisite literary taste. And here, Maik walks towards Chernyshevskaya Street to meet his friends for a game of billiards. And he takes us along with him.
Kharkiv in 1920 and Kharkiv in 2024. What do we know about you and your people? Does memory exist in objects, alleys, trees, rivers? Can we, while walking through the city, sense in the atmosphere the stories of its former inhabitants? And what if reality is woven from the fates of people who were here once and still are, in this interweaving?
Playwright Lyuba Ilnytska about the performance: "Space and time create a landscape that changes very slowly, almost imperceptibly. It contains everything that has happened, everything that has been created, all the real and fictional characters who once lived here and paved their paths through the same hills, rivers, streets. Imaginary worlds are born from natural and cultural landscapes, passed on to us in literature, art, legends, and rumors. Imaginary worlds transform into the present reality, contained in our bodies, daily decisions, names, flags, territories.
Through the theater stage, we enter the spaces of Maik Yohansen, Mykhailo Semenko, Mykola Khvylovy, Valentyna Chistiakova, Les Kurbas. We observe how their contexts transform and coexist with our present, how they create, play billiards, discuss, hunt, manifest life, and experience quiet sorrow in anticipation of catastrophe. And while we embark on our theatrical-research expedition into the 1920s, Yohansen’s green hare watches us. It carefully monitors whether we have become too serious, whether we are capable of breaking down respected traditions, of audacious play and bizarre transformations. Because as long as life is as round as a ball and filled with the brilliance of days — we live them in anticipation of a resolute tomorrow."
In this performance, you will not only discover the "revival" of Ukrainian artists of the past century, but you will also see the immersion of the actors of the Nafta Theater into the works of these figures — in order to find their own face in the feelings so familiar to you. We invite you to explore the connection between the past and the present.
