HERE WILL BE A GARDENA dance performance using sign language, based on the texts of Olivia Laing.
"Every garden is haunted by the ghost of paradise. Every utopia is haunted by the ghost of a garden." — writes Olivia Laing.
In turn, everyone who has visited, lived, or worked in Kharkiv knows that the ghost of utopia haunts this city. We are particularly drawn to the idea of a whimsical paradise, a heaven with gardens full of beauty and potential. The idea of losing one's paradise, expulsion, and return through hard work and struggle.
We sought to create a performance that embodies the idea of care and nurturing a shared space: among us, in the theatre, in our garden, or in the city.In a situation of uncertainty about the future and the constant threat of losing what you love, there arises a fierce need to take root, build networks, and cling to the earth. Here emerges Olivia Laing's text and the image of the garden—a space both real and utopian, where we can exist in the present and cultivate fantasies about the future, where we can both work and rest. Here we have only partial control over reality; we can plan, yet we cannot be certain which seed will sprout or which plant will take root. Unlike the utopian Garden of Eden, there is also a place for death in our garden.
Olivia Laing calls the garden the antithesis of war and considers it a form of resistance. Despite the terrifying reality, we are capable of collectively creating a place of safety, enjoyment, and peace. A place where we will always be, and which will be here after us, to bloom and bear new fruit.
Laing writes about the garden as a cross-species ecosystem of coexistence, eternally changing, moving, progressive, and fruitful—a space of cultivation that requires care.
We also want to live in such an ecosystem, and this is how we strive to see our society and shared space—more equitable, inclusive, and accessible, "where burdens and blessings are distributed more evenly." 
We are also learning this, taking steps towards barrier-free accessibility in the theatre, which is why our performance will include sign language. We turn to body language because it is through our bodies that we perceive natural landscapes and co-create the modern landscapes of our cities.
Through dance and movement, using our own bodies, we will create our realistically-utopian image of the garden, the garden-state, our version of Eden and paradise with beautiful flowering trees, over which enemy missiles and drones fly today.Recently, our theatre team planted our small garden in the courtyard of the theatre. So, we plan to be here to care for it and watch it grow and bloom. The original electronic music for the performance was created by composer Alona KOMA, using, among other things, the sounds of our garden and our collective work.
We are learning to care for our garden, to accept and nurture its diversity, to mourn the losses, to create a vision of what it can become, to sow seeds while knowing that we may not see them sprout, and we will do this as long as we have the strength, even if we are no longer the ones to gather the fruits. But we know for sure that here will be a garden after us. As Voltaire wrote, we must tend to our garden. So, let us work without arguments, for this is the only way to make this life tolerable.
